What does “preserved” really mean?

In a hypothetical conservation trial, researchers applied two cleaning treatments to slate samples bearing identical engravings. Treatment A produced greater immediate gains in legibility than treatment B did. After repeated wetting and drying, A-treated engravings remained easier to read. Yet three-dimensional scans showed that A had rounded the grooves’ edges during cleaning and that subsequent weathering had reduced their depth more than it had in B-treated samples. Optical measurements helped explain the apparent discrepancy: A lightened the slate surrounding the grooves, increasing contrast enough to offset the visual effects of the lost depth. The researchers defined successful preservation as maintaining the engraved structure, rather than merely keeping its markings visible at a particular inspection. When does a finding go too far?

TEXT 1The fictional Merrow team distinguishes a chart’s coordinate accuracy from its accuracy in representing distances between sites. Moving every site the same distance in the same direction would make its coordinates inaccurate while preserving all distances. But evidence that nearby sites share such a displacement supports only a limited conclusion: distances between groups of sites must also be checked before the chart’s relative spacing can be judged accurate overall.

TEXT 2The fictional Tovan team compared an old survey chart with modern measurements of sites in two districts. Every charted site was substantially displaced from its measured coordinates. Within each district, however, the displacements were nearly identical, and distances between sites closely matched modern measurements. The displacement in the northern district differed in direction from that in the southern district. Because their distance checks within both districts showed little error, the researchers concluded that the chart could reliably represent distances between any two sites across the surveyed area, despite its inaccurate coordinates.
