An answer can sound right while relying on an assumption the task never permits. An explanation can be fluent without being sufficient. We want to understand the difference.

That means examining a question as a complete work: its passage, its conditions, its choices, and the reasoning needed to distinguish them. It also means being precise about what a response does—and does not—allow us to conclude.

Research can require distinctions that are difficult to make. The experience should help people use those distinctions without inheriting every difficulty of the underlying problem.

A result should lead back to its source. A pending judgment should look different from a confirmed one. Important information should be present when a person needs it.

Clarity is part of the work, not a final layer placed on top of it.

A useful criticism gives us something precise to improve. We want to preserve that precision—in how we examine content, how we discuss the work, and how we respond when something is not good enough.

Improvement may mean adding a distinction, correcting an interpretation, or removing something that gets in the way. What matters is whether the work becomes more trustworthy and more useful to the person relying on it.
